Nita Sue Melnikoff Lowey (/loi/ LOH-ee; born July 5, 1937) is an American politician who has served as a U.S. Representative from New York since 1989. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Lowey's district was numbered as the 20th from 1989 to 1993, as the 18th from 1993 to 2013, and has been the 17th since 2013. Lowey announced on October 10, 2019 that she will not run for re-election to Congress in 2020.
